Amazon.co.uk Review

There was an understandable mix of emotions bubbling to the surface when the final episode of Battlestar Galactica was finally broadcast in the first half of 2009. On the one hand, this has proven to be vintage science fiction television, easily one of the most ambitious, daring and flat-out successful TV projects in recent times. And on the other, it’s all over, with this box set bringing together the final episodes of the show.

Inevitably, this final season wraps up many of the mysteries and narrative questions of Battlestar Galactica, none of which we intend to spoil here. The fate of humanity, the hunt for the fabled earth and the further revelations about the Cylons are packed in, and the standard throughout this final season remains sky high.

The actual ending itself, as it happens, proved quite divisive, but arguably that’s part of the strength of Battlestar Galactica. Because this is a show that, right to the end, doesn’t take the easy road, and delivers some of the most intelligent, dark drama of recent years. It’s a staggering achievement, and this final season, along with the entirety of the show itself, is set to still be talked about decades into the future. Quite brilliant, and not to be missed. --Jon Foster

5 star(s) - Ye Gods!

Having just seen the grand finale, after spending a couple of weeks watching the complete BSG from the start, a few thoughts.
I realised pretty early on that if you begin pulling at the threads of this series, the whole thing will quickly come apart. (I mean there are plot holes...and there are plot holes...but you could get a Pegasus sized Battlestar through most of these.) I also avoided trawling the web looking for "explication" whilst watching the series; but I was amused this morning to see the level of online anger that the final episode provoked - and this anger is instructive: For all its shortcomings, Battlestar Galactica is/was a series that people actually care about.
It's not hard to see why; the acting is uniformly great - with Iain Duncan Smith's eyebrow raising portrayal of Tigh particularly memorable. The production values are high, and CGI is used effectively and intelligently. Finally, if you can just suspend disbelief, ignore the multitudinous loose ends and inexplicables, and go along with it, BSG is as gripping and even moving a piece of television as you are ever likely to find.
I'm not a big fan of sci-fi generally...but I frakkin' loved it.

5 star(s) - An End - and a New Beginning

So we finally say goodbye to the crew of the Galactica and the civilian fleet it led. What a journey it has been - character-led drama of the first order. The writing, the acting performances, the SFX, everything . . . for me BSG is a modern classic. Edward James Olmos was never less than compelling as grizzled old veteran Bill Adama, though I found myself warming tremendously to the brilliant performance of Michael Hogan as Colonel Saul Tigh - his famed one-eyed acting was wondrous to behold!

I know that not everyone was happy with the ending and that's ok - that's the way of things. I found it satisfying and thoroughly enjoyable. There were some mysteries and ambiguities but again, that's ok with me, I don't always like to have everything spelled out for me and wrapped up neatly.

I can't wait for the upcoming TV movie and the spin off series. They have a high standard to follow, for sure!

5 star(s) - Good end to a great series

Really enjoyed the entire saga which I watched in big chunks by DVD. There are some minor flaws and not everyone was happy with the ending but meh, can't please everyone. Well worth a look if you enjoy good sci fi.

5 star(s) - Battlestari Fantastic

Into Sci-Fi?- You'll not beat this fantastic series revamp of the 80's Classic Battlestar Galactica. Mini series and 1st 4 series in 5 you'll be glued to this and compelled to keep watching episode after episode.
Great acting, great cinematography and a great story line that keeps you thinking and guessing from the 1st to last minute.
Love Sci-fi- Love Battlestar Galactica, best money you can spend for 50+ hours for pure action. You'll not regret this purchase. Go buy and enjoy.

5 star(s) - Everything that has a beginning has an end.

So the epic re-imagined BSG saga comes to an end and despite a few flaws here and there the series as a whole was top class television. It quickly developed a voice of it's own with its own unique story to tell, silencing the cynics who dismissed it as just another remake. Unlike other numerous recent television shows it told a coherent story and didn't throw in ridiculous twists and turns and pull the rug from under your feet just for the sake of it. Sure there were surprises and revelations but they were always delivered deftly and timely and always felt right, you always knew that you were ultimately heading somewhere - an ending!

This final series and particularly the final episode seem to have divided opinions, but for me it could not have ended any other way, the ending we have was always coming.

One of the aspects about the show that really appealed to me, and I'm not religious at all, was its mysterious religious and spiritual nature and the notion that God was ultimately behind everything. This spiritual aspect was so refreshing and interesting and elevated the show above the trappings of normal sci-fi.

I'm glad that the writers' didn't always go down the 'lets explain everything with science' route like Star Trek always did or employed over-used scientific explanations, like time-travel (no one ever gets time-travel stories right anyway!). The final few scenes of the final episode defy conventions and expectations, and despite a few open ended questions here and there (which I actually like, I hate being spoon-fed explanations!) at least it reached a conclusion.

Other reviewers have also commented that the show overall was dull and unexciting, well I always suggest watching certain episodes again and re-evaluating that assessment, the Pegasus and Exodus episodes for example are some of the most exciting television you will ever see!

Overall the re-imagined BSG series is a triumph, I just hope Caprica can live up to the quality.
