Find a better third movie in any franchise to date, and you’ll really be doing something special. For Toy Story 3 sets a massively high bar for future threequels, and delivers the best family film in some time as it does so.

It picks up some time after Toy Story 2, with Andy off to college, leaving the likes of Woody, Buzz and Mr Potato Head with an uncertain future. A series of events soon leave them in the midst of a daycare centre, but things, inevitably, don’t turn out quite as expected.

To say any more about the story would be to spoil some of the fun, so instead, let’s just say this: Toy Story 3 is a sensational piece of work. It takes a little bit of time to ultimately get going, but when it starts firing on all cylinders, it’s packed with some genuinely incredible action sequences, moments of real suspense, and some terrific comedy, too. It’s all blended together effortlessly well, and is tied up with an ending that’ll surely melt the hardest of hearts.

And, what’s more, its high definition presentation is reference standard. Animated generally comes out better than anything else when presented in 1080p, and Toy Story 3 more than proves that. It looks, and sounds, staggering. And that this presentational work is attached to such a terrific film makes this, ultimately, one of the finest Blu-rays on the market.
