5 star(s) - Survival of the genre

The factor for me that raises Romero's films above others in the horror genre is his commentary on the human condition. Few horror films provoke thought or interest beyond their visceral appeal. With Romero you know you will not be viewing a one dimensional story in which the film maker's only aim is to make you jump in your seat or squirm with disgust, though these factors are not enirely absent. 'Survival' moves the dead franchise a respectable step forward with humans seeking to co-exist in world over run with the undead and come to terms with that ultimate of tabboos, death itself. All the ingredients are present as feature in Romero's previous Dead films; fractious groups of (human) survivors, social satire, black humour, witty dialogue, a growing sense of doom for the protaganists, gore, and a lot of flesh eating zombies. If Romero's jaded message is still the same after 40 years it is sadly still pertinent in today's world. A very enjoyable film and a treat for any Romero fan. He still delivers . . . Long live the Dead!!

5 star(s) - Great atmosphere

I like it. I REALLY like it. Romero knows how to create a very intense atmosphere - unlike a lot of others with bigger budgets.

One does not always need to compare with Dawn.

5 star(s) - zombietastic

I have seen all the Romero zombie epics, and i can honestly say the only weak one was "Land".
This one is brilliant. How any self-respecting zombie-lover can give this film one star is beyond belief.
There is plenty of gruesome entertainment including a brilliant flare gun death and fantastic exploding heads, and the usual political message.
I think it is very stylishly directed and exciting.
Top-hole George. Can't wait for the next instalment.
People who have slated this have obviously not seen Apocalypse of the Dead which is also a new release. Watch that cr@p then Romero's film again and acknowledge the genius that is George A.

5 star(s) - Still a genius

I really enjoyed this film. It had the true Romero feel to it. With some of the typical zombie gore scenes I've come to expect. I love the fact this film as his others concentrates on a small pocket of characters and the way people are always too concerned with petty issues rather than the big issues.

I haven't got much more to say other than I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd recommend it to any zombie fan and any Romero fan. He's still got it.

5 star(s) - Romero back to where he belongs!

At last Romero has returned to the original dead trilogy style and content. Gone are the excessive studio controlled weaknesses of Land and the unfulfilling aspects of Diary. With `Survival' Romero takes his audience back to the style and context of the previous masterpieces, he gives the film an isolated, military against civilian, communities crumbling, social commentary that we all loved in previous dead films.

Romero brings back the beautiful depth of field that was so sadly missing from Diary and limited in Land. His auteur touch is still there and has developed over the years. Yes there are elements of poor quality CGI but then this film didn't get the budget of Avatar - but is vastly more pleasing and entertaining!

Sadly with the recent increase in studio junkies churning out Zombie films with excessive blood, guts and gore many film goers have forgotten the original maestro of the Zombie and his humour filled satires of a society on the brink of destruction. Many seeing Romero's work lacking the `gut munching' of the modern incarnations, yes there are some scenes in the film for Romero's gore hounds but the majority of the film concerns society and the reactions of different communities coming together to escape the endless march of the recently departed.
Romero has given us a zombie western hybrid that hits all the buttons and does its job. If you are a true Romero fan you will love it, you will if you pardon the expression devour it! If you are not a fan then you will probably fail to understand it and lampoon it. Don't wait for the US version with all the extras buy it now and enjoy it before it is spoilt by some loud mouthed Neanderthal critic who only grades films on the freebies the production/distribution company has sent them!

Welcome back George A Romero and may you continue to bring us this level of filmatic entertainment for many many years!
