Amazon.co.uk Review

"Dirty" Harry Callahan was one of the first screen characters to embody contemporary fears about crime--and the uncompromising response to it that much of the audience would liked to have seen. Clint Eastwood's laconic rogue cop became an instant screen icon; his catchphrases ("Do you feel lucky?", "Make my day") were and still are endlessly quoted, and he even inspired a futuristic comic-strip counterpart in the person of Judge Dredd. Made at the time when the real "Zodiac" serial killer was terrorising San Francisco, the original Dirty Harry struck a frighteningly realistic note in 1971: aside from Eastwood, director Don Siegel's taught, pacey direction, Lalo Schifrin's nervy jazz score and Andrew Robinson's cackling psycopath "Scorpio" all make a strong impact. Such was the film's success that it gave rise to no less than four sequels, none of which are its equal but all of which get by on the charisma of Eastwood's anti-hero, even when he's increasingly trapped by the character's one-dimensional persona.

This five-disc box set contains all the "Harry" movies: Dirty Harry (1971); Magnum Force (1973, with David Soul as a vigilante bike cop); The Enforcer (1976, with Tyne "Lacey" Daly as Harry's new and reluctant partner); Sudden Impact (1983, the weakest of the lot costarring Eastwood's then-partner Sondra Locke) and The Dead Pool (1988, a surprisingly upbeat end to the series). --Mark Walker

5 star(s) - A Blu ray to be proud of

You can't be too careful buying Blu ray these days, as often they are purely a lazy money spinner and show no distinct improvement from the previous DVD version.

HOWEVER I am very pleased to say that this Dirty Harry Boxset has made the transition to Blu ray very well, picture and sound quality are both pretty impressive for films of this era. I had previously owned this boxset on VHS and DVD, but am certainly glad I pushed the boat out for the Blu ray version and would advise any other Dirty Harry fans to do the same.

5 star(s) - You feeling lucky.......Punk.

I can without doubt say that Dirty Harry is one of my top 10 films of all time. I have a thing for films made in the 70's when filmmaking was at its greatest (in my opinion).

The film spawned 4 sequels over the years that seemed to slowly decline as each one spawned. However the thing that held them together was the fact that our anti hero Harry was in each and every one of them and we kept coming back to see the great man in action. Harry Callaghan was a character that could carry a film by itself (Like Charles Bronson in Death Wish, we just like seeing him shoot lowlifes don't we? and the actual film takes second stage to the character).

In this package you receive all five films with a few extras on each film. I am only interested in the extras on Dirty Harry itself and they are pretty good,

The film quality is pretty good but at times some grain is visible.

Overall if you like Dirty Harry and don't have the Blu Ray get this fantastic box set of all 5 films.

5 star(s) - The Dirty Harry Collection - - Five disc box set

What can i say its a classic. All five films in the one box.

The first disc is the original Dirty Harry, which has Clint Eastwood playing Harry Callahan of the San Fransico P.D. He is on the trail of a killer calling himself the Scorpio. Harry will do anything to get him including breaking the rules, a great film that ends with a climatic shootout on a school bus.

Disc 2.
This is Magnum Force which is about a group of maverick motorcycle police officers going around killing all those people that they think need to be given a good dose of justice. Once again Harry Has to stop them.

Disc 3
This is the Enforcer. The last of the good ones. This has Tyne Daley From Cagney and Lacey teaming up as Harry's partner as the go around San Fransico trying to take out a group of terroists that have kidnapped a mayor. There is a great climax at Acotraz prison.

Disc 4
The weakest of the lot Sudden Impact. This one has Harry on leave. But where he goes murder is sure to follow. Not much of a story line and it lacks the shoot outs that we are used to, but it does deliver that imortal line "go ahead, make my day"

Disc 5
The last installment. The DEad Pool. Not a bad film, with liam Neeson as a film producer who is being framed for the murders that is going on, this also has a small cameo role from jim carrey at the beginning, not a bad film but not great.

All in all im really glad that i got this box set, it really does make my day

5 star(s) - You've Gotta Ask Yourself One Question...

Should you buy this box set? And the answer is a resounding: YES!

Not only does it contain one of the greatest films in cinema history, but all of it's sequels too!

Everybody's heard Clint's famous catchphrases. Go ahead, make my day is really overused that it has become a bit of a farce. Same with Do you feel lucky, punk?
Classic catchphrases that are so well used they've lost their impact.
Watch Dirty Harry today and remember why they became such classic lines. Watching Clint say them again on screen for the first time makes you forget all the overuse. The way Clint delivers them is outstanding, and better than any other pretenders or gags made out of them. Clint really personifies the Dirty Harry character.
Yes, the first film is just as relevent today as ever, still as startling, violent and downright cool. It is even surprisingly funny, laced with a dark humour.

Even if you have expectations going in to see this film for the first time, it will exceed them in every way.

The rest of the films, however, aren't that great. The further along they go the worse they are. Magnum Force is decent, but not classic. The Enforcer is entertaining. Sudden Impact is watchable. But Dead Pool is dire.

For a boxset, the extras are a bit skinny, but worth watching. And another interesting facet of having all the films together is literally seeing Clint age on screen. But let's be honest, he still holds it well, even in his latest Million Dollar Baby.

Clint is a legend. Dirty Harry is a classic. Not owning this DVD would be a crime.
