- Underated Gem.
I watched this movie when I had nothing better to do. Because I had never heard of it and usually most people don't bother with a movie they have'nt heard of before because you automatically assume it's a dud but boy was i surprised! I loved this film so much I am buying it on Bluray! The acting was superb (IMO) and the plot was filled with so many twists and turns I was literally on the edge of my seat from the moment it started. The ending was brilliant - I never saw it coming! Thats what really makes the movie for me - the ending. It's so brilliant in it's unexpectedness (if there was ever such a word?) that it had a "Sixth Sense" ring to it. Pierce plays a good "baddie" IMO. He should play these roles more often. Great film, watch it for yourself - don't be discouraged by negative reviews. It's a good movie!
- A decent, well acted thriller
As an entry into the 'decent family menaced by kidnapper' canon, this is a well acted psychological thriller. Brosnan, Butler and Bello are the focus of the movie, other actors providing little more than cameos. Pierce Brosnan's character provides the requisite menace without resorting to eye-rolling psychopath, while Maria Bello and Gerard Butler are an effective couple-on-the-edge. Any more of the plot will give too much away but this is a largely character-driven film, the tension coming from the performances rather than any crash bang action sequences.
The story moves along quickly and effectively and probably suits the small screen better than the cinema. It's one of those thrillers where knowing the ending will probably reduce the number of repeat viewings though, unlike something like The Sixth Sense where the journey was as much fun as the destination, in this case there are few stand-out scenes to re-enjoy.
Much of the film takes part at night and the Blu-ray retains good shadow detail. Picture quality is generally good but this isn't the type of film to marvel at scenery or SFX so would be just as enjoyable on DVD.
- unbelievable plot.
Butterfly on a Wheel is a reasonable film in that it holds your interest (once it gets going). However it is based on a very far fetched plot, one that really would not work in reallity. The acting is ok, and it does make a change to see Pierce Brosnan seemingly in the role of the psychopath. Not one I would rush to see again, but if you have nothing better going on...
